Why In-Person

Some Things Can't Be Taught Through a Screen

You can learn the theory of mushroom cultivation online, and many of our students start there. But a real mushroom retreat is something else entirely. The smell of fresh mycelium, the rhythm of a ceremony, the weight of a hand on your shoulder when something cracks open inside you? That belongs to the body. That belongs to the land.

01

Hands on Mycelium

Real labs, real jars, real flushes. You'll watch substrate colonise in front of you and leave knowing it in your hands, not just your head.

02

Held in Ceremony

Fire, breath, cacao, mushrooms. Our facilitators have held thousands of journeys with care and rigour. Set and setting are everything, and we've built the setting.

03

Found Your People

Most students tell us the community is the medicine. You'll leave with a global network of psychonauts, mycophiles, and weirdos who get you.

04

The Land Itself

Lake Atitlán is one of the most powerful places on Earth. Volcanoes on every side, indigenous Maya wisdom in the soil, and a fungal kindom hiding in plain sight.

Fungi HQ · Tzununa, Guatemala

The Land That Holds It All

Fungi Academy HQ sits on the western shore of Lake Atitlán, tucked into the village of Tzununa. We're nestled in the highlands, surrounded by volcanoes, cloud forests, and the kind of silence that only comes from being far from the machine.

The property is what you'd hope a mushroom academy looks like. Working labs, fruiting chambers, a ceremony space, gardens we eat from, a kitchen where the food is alive, and a porch facing the lake that's seen a thousand sunsets and just as many epiphanies.

This is the land that holds every Fungi Academy mushroom retreat. It's not a venue we rent. It's home.

Got Questions?

The Stuff Everyone Asks

And if your question isn't here, just book a free call with our team. We love talking shop.

Where are Fungi Academy's in person immersions held?

Every mushroom retreat we run takes place at Fungi Academy HQ in Tzununa, on the shores of Lake Atitlán, Guatemala. The property is a 30 minute boat ride from Panajachel and sits within a permaculture village surrounded by jungle, gardens, and mushroom labs.

Do I need prior experience with mushrooms or psychedelics?

No prior experience is needed. Our cultivation courses welcome complete beginners, and our journeywork and space holder programs are designed for people stepping in with reverence, no matter where you are on the path. Every immersion comes with a thorough prep doc so you arrive ready.

What's included in the price?

Every in person immersion includes shared accommodation (or tent camping), three gourmet plant forward meals a day, all course curriculum, a full colour workbook, and any sacred ceremonies on the schedule. Private rooms are available for an additional fee. Flights and travel to Lake Atitlán are not included.

How do I get to Fungi Academy from Guatemala City?

Most students fly into Guatemala City (GUA), take a shuttle (around 3 hours) to Panajachel, then catch a 30 minute lancha boat across Lake Atitlán to Tzununa. We send detailed travel instructions after enrolment, and we can connect you with trusted shuttle providers.

Are these programs legal in Guatemala?

Yes. Psilocybin mushrooms exist in a legal grey area in Guatemala. They aren't explicitly scheduled, and their ceremonial use has a long indigenous history in the highlands. Our cultivation curriculum focuses on edible and medicinal species, while our journeywork programs are educational and harm reduction focused.

What if I want to come but can't pick a program?

Book a free 30 minute call with our team. We'll help you find the right mushroom retreat for where you are. We've welcomed 1,000+ students from 40+ countries since 2016, and we've gotten pretty good at matching humans to the medicine that meets them.

Are payment plans or scholarships available?

Yes. Payment plans are available on every in person immersion, just reach out and we'll set you up. We also reserve a small number of partial scholarships each year for BIPOC and frontline community members. If that's you, mention it on a discovery call.

What's the cancellation policy?

Deposits are non refundable but transferable to a future immersion (within 12 months). Full refunds (minus deposit) up to 60 days before the program. We're humans. If life happens, talk to us, we'll figure it out together.
