Meet Your Panelists

Jasper Degenaars is a mycologist, educator, and creator. With 12+ years of mushroom cultivation experience and over 2,500 students taught since 2019, he illuminates the intricate world of fungi with passion and expertise.

With a wealth of knowledge in mycology and community living, he nurtures a deep connection between people and the Fungal Kingdom, fostering ecological stewardship and sustainable practices. Jasper has co-created 20+ educational experiences and retreats on top of countless in-person workshops and classes he has taught all over the world. 

With a penchant for interdisciplinary collaboration, he cultivates diverse communities of learners, empowering them to explore the symbiotic relationship between fungi, people, and their environments.

Richard is a self-taught mushroom farmer and educator, who started learning about the craft of cultivation in 2018. Utilizing YouTube university, the Shroomery, and Mycotopia he was able to learn the ins and outs of growing medicinal, edible, and sacred mushrooms.

Based at the Fungi Academy in Guatemala, Richard is one of the main teachers for the in-person Mushroom Cultivation Courses. As well as one of the main stewards of our community and educational space, located on Lake Atitlan, where we cultivate various mushroom species, gardens, and a safe space for community living.

His other passions and life works include permaculture and sustainability techniques, intentional community living, natural building, and herbalism. With a bachelors degree in Geography and a Master degree in Environment and Community. His studies and research focused on intentional community living at ecovillages throughout Hawaii, Oregon, Australia, New Zealand, and Guatemala.

Alannah is a mycologist, and biomimicry practitioner and has teamed with fungi for over a decade. She founded New Earth Fungi (NEF)- a gourmet and medicinal mushroom farm based in Juneau, AK in 2020 to provide fresh mushrooms to Alaska’s remote communities. Alannah is passionate about food security, Nature-based education, and innovation and has led educational activities such as wild mushroom forays, and mushroom cultivation workshops.

Alannah has been tremendously inspired by nature-based solutions and has spent her time as an M.Sc. in Biomimicry re-imagining healthcare systems by seeking inspiration from mycelial networks. Alannah values cooperative relationships like fungi and strives to emulate Nature for the health of our communities, economy, and environment.

Kyle Garrone holds a degree in Plant Biology from the University of California, Davis with a focus on plant pathology and mycology. He has been the Production Manager of Far West Fungi since graduating from UC Davis in 2010, with his primary focus on increasing yields, reducing labor and experimenting with new varieties of mushrooms that have potential for wholesale customers.

Kyle has traveled throughout the world to find the most successful and efficient growing methods and the most resilient and highest yielding mushroom varieties. He enjoys sharing what he has learned with those who are interested in exotic mushroom cultivation. His upcoming festival is the Santa Cruz Mountain Mushroom Festival.
